Verdi’s 17th opera paved the way for the composer’s breakthrough to world fame, along with his two other works within his “popular trilogy”, “Il trovatore and La traviata”.
The melodies tell a gripping story of how a father’s protective love and a daughter’s first great love ultimately prove fatal. They both uncover a deception, the father orders for his daughter’s seducer to be killed. The daughter, intending to warn the Duke, is struck by the blade which is supposed to avenge her honour.
