Description

DON GIOVANNI FOR CHAMBER OPERA

Don Giovanni represents a highlight in the operatic works of Mozart. The music describes a lover who violates the accepted concepts of morality, yet is also capable of intense passion. Mozart, who was 31 years old at the time, personally directed the premiere in Prague in October 1787.

The focus is the fascinating and unscrupulous figure of the womaniser from Seville. He also pulls his surrounding world into these events: Donna Anna, the Commendatore’s daughter who he tried to seduce and whose father he kills in a duel. Donna Elvira, who he has abandoned and vacillates between love and hatred towards him. Zerline, a young peasant girl from the countryside who almost succumbs to his courting. His goal in life is to conquer the female being with whom he is momentarily in love. Don Giovanni’s protagonist is the Commendatore, the embodiment of morals and justice. His servant Leporello plays the role of the harlequin from the old popular comedy.

THE THEATRE

Since the 17th century occiasional drama performances took place in the park of Schönbrunn, but there was no permanent building until Empress Maria Theresia commissioned Nikolaus Pacassi to construct the Palace Theatre. It opened in 1747 in the western side wing of the Palace where then the empress watched her children dance, perform and stage tableaux vivant.
When Napoleon established his headquarters in Schönbrunn, the theatre was renovated. It reopened in 1809 with Racine’s "Phaedra". At the time of the Congress of Vienna singers of the Kärntnertor theatre performed there for the royal majesties then present in Vienna.
The theatre was used during the summer months under the reign of Ferdinand I when the Burgtheater (court theatre) performed mainly comedies.
