The works of author E. T .A. Hoffmann, who loves the singer Stella, are at the centre of this opera. Whilst waiting for a letter from Stella, he tells of love affairs from the past. When he comes to the end of his story-telling, Hoffmann is completely intoxicated. Reality and fantasy have become so blurred that when Stella finally turns up, he no longer recognizes her. Jacques Offenbach was not able to see the unsurpassed success of his work: He died a few months before the world premiere, which took to the Paris stage on 10 February 1881. |
